Wilkes, Developer of First Digital Computer, Dies at 97
Sir Maurice Wilkes, leader of developing the first stored-program digital computer in the 1940s, has died at age 97. Along with his Cambridge University colleagues, he also made other significant contributions including building one of the first high-speed, distributed computing networks called the "Cambridge Ring." He also designed the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSCA), which was the basis for the world's first business computer, LEO.
